Bug Fest!

BUG FEST!
Sun, 3/11 | 10AM-3PM
Free in the outdoor courtyard of OdySea in the Desert.
No admission required to attend.
All ages welcome!

The Butterfly Wonderland & OdySea Aquarium Foundations present the biggest bug bash of the year with the first annual Bug Fest event! Enjoy cockroach races, edible insect treats, crafts, insect petting zoos and more.

This event is free and recommended for bug-lovers of all ages.

Stations & Activities include:

Cockroach Races
Come one, come all to the race of the century! This is a competition unlike any other, featuring some of the animal kingdom’s most impressive athletes. These competitors are in peak physical condition with tough-as-nails exoskeletons, six nimble legs, and a hunger for victory. Step up and see if you can predict who will scurry across the finish line first.

Insect Petting Zoo
Petting Zoos are known for housing some of the cutest and cuddliest animals around, and this Petting Zoo is no exception… well, so long as you consider Giant katydids, millipedes, and tarantulas “cuddly.” These gentle giants are often described as scary or gross, but we’d like to politely disagree and instead invite you to face your fears and maybe make a new friend.

Entomophagy (bug tasting)
Despite the fact that edible insects are absolutely delicious, for some, it requires a bit of bravery to take the leap. Edible insects hold huge potential as an ingredient in creating new and delicious foods. The more you know about the benefits associated with edible insects the easier and more enjoyable the experience becomes.

Name-A-Cockroach
Admit it, this might be the most unforgettable gift ever. For just $5 we’re offering up the chance to name a cockroach after someone you love (…or hate) and receive a personalized naming certificate. Customize a roach name card, snap a photo, and share it with your loved ones and/or sworn enemies. All proceeds go to the Butterfly Wonderland Foundation.

The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly
Meet some of the Southwest’s most helpful, horrifying, and harmful inhabitants. Learn which species to welcome, which to avoid, and which to call an expert about.

Crafts
Dream up and bring to life your very own creature creations with our Build-A-Bug craft station, or skip the DIY and take home a one-of-a-kind insect greeting card instead.

Butterfly Gardening Station
A Butterfly Wonderland specialist will demonstrate which plants to add to your garden to attract beautiful butterflies this season.

Bee Station by Rango Honey
Meet bee keeping experts, learn the ins & outs of caring for these important pollinators, and even sample some local honey varieties.

Major League Baseball Spring Training

Every year in March, the Cactus League invites you to experience spring training, a beloved Arizona treasure. In Scottsdale, we are proud to have not one, but two world class spring training stadiums. In Old Town, there’s the Scottsdale Stadium (home to the San Francisco Giants) and the Salt River Fields (home to our own AZ Diamondbacks & the CO Rockies). Several other stadiums are easily accessible around the Valley and within close proximity to Scottsdale, including Sloan Park, home of the World Series Champions Chicago Cubs. Check out the Cactus League website to find a complete schedule of games. Spring training games are scheduled throughout the month of March.

Dining Out With Kids Who Like to Shout: Three Low-Key Places to Eat in Scottsdale with Kids

There are many things I took for granted before having children–namely, showering, peeing unaccompanied, having a moment to think, and eating in restaurants. Though my twins are two-and-a-half years old, it feels like it has been eighty-four years since I’ve been able to sit in a restaurant and enjoy a meal during daylight hours, which […]
