Water Safety During Questionable Weather

As we go through monsoon season in the Valley, it is vital to remember the importance of Water Safety when in and around your pool. Weather forecasts can change quickly so it’s important to be alert at all times. I had the privilege of meeting Nora (from Swim with Nora) for private swim lessons at our home for Riley and Mary Alice. Not only did we have a great time having lessons on how to swim, we were able to learn about some of the important safety measures to take during the monsoon season here in Arizona.

Lightning is attracted to water. When lightning strikes water, the electric current disperses immediately and horizontally. Staying safe is a matter of staying OUT of the water during a storm. Keep out of the water for at least 30 minutes after the last flash of lightning is seen or thunder is heard is an important rule to follow. Be aware of your surroundings and check the weather before you hop in for a quick dip.

“When thunder roars, go indoors”

Make sure to educate your kids about the hazards of playing outside or near a pool during a thunderstorm. If you do have a storm sneak up on you while in the pool, get out immediately! One of the very first things we teach students participating in the American Red Cross Learn-to-Swim program is getting in and out of the pool. Although a basic skill, this task is something that all children and adults should practice.

Arizona is Unique

In Arizona there are many types of storms such as haboobs and microbursts that occur very abruptly without notice. The United States Lifesaving Association recognizes Arizona as having a higher frequency of lightning strikes than most states. Lightning cannot be prevented, but the vulnerability of lifeguards, beach-goers, and people near bodies of water can be minimized.
