Back to School Conversations: Starter Questions

0

school conversationsCan you believe that summer is over and the kids are back in school already? You may have had this “conversation” a dozen times by now: How was school? Good/fine/whatever. We’re all happy to hear that school was “good.” However, if you’re looking for more details than a one word answer, here are a ten questions to spark deeper back to school conversations during the drive home:

School Conversation Questions

  • What did you learn today?
  • What did you read or listen to today?
  • Did everyone have a friend to sit by at lunch?
  • What did you play on the playground?
  • What did you do during your specials today?
  • How did you show kindness today?
  • How did you help someone today?
  • Did you feel safe all day?
  • What was the best part of today?
  • What are you looking forward to?

With a focus on academic learning as well as character building, you’ll start to get a clear picture of what your child’s school day consists of. Most of the school conversations starter questions require more than a one word answer. This might be more than some kids want to share at first. Feel free to share answers about your day, too.

Your child might want to spill every detail of their day during the car ride home. However, some kids need a little time to decompress and process everything. Our family likes to talk about each of our days during dinner. Other kids might prefer to get everything off their mind during a conversation before bed.

Getting in the habit of really talking about our days now, will hopefully (fingers crossed!) lead to more open communication when our children reach the difficult teenage years.

In case you’re struggling to get out the door in time, here are a few shortcuts to help save you some time in the morning.
