Even though kiddos of preschool age and up are headed back to school, you may still have little littles at home, or you have the weekends, and it’s technically still summer around here, so we’re keeping the vibe high with this list of family friendly events and activities for August 2017. 

Free First Friday – Children’s Museum of Phoenix, Friday August 4th 5pm – 9pm. Sponsored by Target, the Phoenix Children’s Museum is open to the public free of charge on the first Friday of most months. To make it an extra fun adventure for the family, consider taking the Light Rail downtown. 

Prowl & Play | Dinosaurs! – Phoenix Zoo, August 5th 5:30 – 8:30. The dinosaurs are coming…and they’re ready to party! Get ready to roar and explore at this epic night of giant fun. Lots of interactive entertainment, activities, and “keep it cool” fun! Um, hello, water slides! Pro-tip: Swing by the Thunder Lizard Lounge for a cold beer or glass of wine (21+ of course)! Arizona Diamondback Games – Summer is for baseball. Take the family out to the ballgame this month and root for the home team! Check out the D-Back’s schedule here.  

1st Day Back to School – For students enrolled in the Scottsdale Unified School District, the first day of classes is on August 7. For students enrolled in the Paradise Valley Unified School District, the first day of classes is on August 9.  Sad & yay all at the same time!  

Story Time for Tots – Butterfly Wonderland, Wednesdays August 9th & 23rd.. 10-11am Bring your tots, ages 2-5, to story time in our birthday room, including fun education, stories and crafts featuring butterflies, caterpillars and more! Closed for Maintenance – The McCormick-Stillman Railroad Park will be closed for maintenance, Aug. 7-11. Enhancements include painting many outdoor shade structures, deep cleaning public facilities, repairing trains and several other improvements. The park will reopen at 9 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 12. Not a family event, but definitely worth making note of for a mom about town.

Adult Play Date – Children’s Museum of Phoenix, Saturday August 12th 7pm – 11pm. Grab your neon and let’s GLOW crazy! This is a great idea for a moms’ night out or a date night with your main squeeze. What grown-ups can expect at this play date include a GLOW dance party in the museum’s atrium, GLOW bingo, GLOW body paint & markers, cash bars on all three floors, food trucks, retro games, giant beer pong, giant Jenga, glitter tattoos, three floors of interactive exhibits, and MUCH MORE! Mom’s Morning Out –  Join SMB and NYDJ for a morning out away from the kiddos. There will be bites, beverages, and 20% off shopping! Find the perfect fit jeans or just mingle with friends. More info here

Steam Storytime – Scottsdale Library. Come and explore the concepts related to STEAM – Science, Technology, Engineering, Art/Design and Math! Using some of our favorite read-aloud books, this storytime looks to create fun and hands-on ways to challenge children’s thinking and problem-solving skills. Free Kids Yoga – Wednesday, August 16th  9am – 9:45am. Beat the heat with Whole Foods Market Scottsdale and Floo-id Yoga! Join a free introduction to Kids Yoga. All participating kids will receive a free treat following the class. No RSVP necessary. Email [email protected] with any questions.
