What is your One Word?

Do you do New Years Resolutions?

I haven’t in many years. I was always struggling with keeping the resolutions for the first month, and then feeling discouraged as the resolutions got moved to the back burner.

Are you still trying to come up with a resolution this year? I know, I know… it is already January, so the obvious choices are join the gym or clean the house.

Well, what about skipping resolutions this year and just choosing a word? I love this tradition. Each year, I choose a word that I want to focus on. This year, my word is calm.

My home might be loud and the laundry might be overflowing, but I want those who live here and those who visit to feel calm when they enter. This may mean saying no to the busyness and the obligations. I firmly believe that my people will appreciate calm. So often we rush and push and strive. What would happen if we were just quiet and peaceful? What would happen if we allowed ourselves to take a deep breath in the middle of our hectic schedules.

Is it possible to have peace and calm when you have a teenager, a tween, a preschooler, and a baby? Yes. Absolutely, yes. It comes down to me. It comes down to how full I pack our schedule and my attitude towards the things I choose to put on our calendar.
