Celebrating Flag Day with your children {the important holiday, that everyone forgets}

smb flagNext month, homes and business all over the country will be covered in red, white, & blue decor to celebrate July 4th.

But  we as moms shouldn’t forget that June can be a great month to celebrate America as well!

I am personally very thankful for the month of June. My birthday is in June and, even though my dad has been gone for 20 years, I get to celebrate his memory on Father’s Day in June. My father fought in World War II and Korea. I was born long after he had retired from the military, but I was so blessed to be a part of the military community.

He taught me so much about patriotism, honoring my elders, and giving it forward. This picture is a solemn memory to honor my father and mother, but it is also a great reminder to embrace the American love for patriotism and freedom.

For our family, this weekend will not only be about celebrating my father on Father’s Day (Sunday, June 15th) but also honoring him and all those who served our country on Flag Day (Saturday, June 14th).   Flag Day is a great chance to salute the flag that represents our freedom.

Celebrate Flag Day with your children.

If you haven’t taken the time to learn about the history of our flag, I highly recommend that you do. You can start here. Pull up the research on your favorite search engine, print out some documents or pictures, and discuss these important facts with your children. They may have fun with doing a summer activity about Flag Day! Here is a link to a great site that provides fun activities for little ones!

Sure, I admit that (probably like many of you) I have taken Flag Day for granted. Now that I am older, I want to learn more and appreciate as much as I can about our country’s history, and “our land of the free and home of the brave.” I am not ashamed to sing those old fashioned patriotic songs, and I love hearing my kids sing them too!

Pledging Allegience to the Flag

Evey morning, I get to say the Pledge of Allegiance at the school where I work. I love hearing the words and realizing that the USA is still ONE nation under God. I know there are many religions out there, and some of them do not believe in the God that our founding fathers believed. But, I do believe our nation has been blessed because of our solid foundation that was laid down by those brave men who wrote the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence. I hope and pray that we can continue to be ONE nation, while accepting and honoring our differing views on religion.

Thankful to be an American

I will close my little patriotic speech with the words: always be thankful. I wake up everyday and I am so thankful to live here in America. I am thankful that I have children that I can teach at home about our country’s heritage. I am thankful for the freedom of speech, so that I can write how I feel about my beliefs. I am thankful that I can commune with like-minded moms and friends who want the same things for their children and their future. I encourage you to choose thankfulness about being part of this great country too!

Have a wonderful weekend celebrating our family’s fathers and our country’s forefathers.
