Have You Tried Overnight OIAJ (Oats In a Jar)?

Oats in a jar

I have a new obsession for breakfast: Overnight OIAJ (Oats In a Jar)!

Overnight oats are a cold version of oatmeal. There is no cooking involved. The basic mixture is oats, Greek yogurt and milk (any kind or water). From there it’s all about creativity and what sort of flavor you want to make. The oats are called “overnight” because once you have your oats mixed, you soak overnight to allow the oats to soften and mixture become firm.

For a busy mom and family, this healthy treat is easy and quick (two of our favorite words!) There are many variations of this tasty meal, but I tend to like the more healthy and kid friendly versions. I found one that my daughter loves, which includes cookie butter and bananas-yummy!

Here are a few of my own recipes that have become family favorites… Enjoy!

Tips: I often substitute regular oats with a gluten free version and if I want more texture I use rolled oats. You can use whatever variation of milk you desire. Also, if you have an almost- empty jar of nut, peanut, or cookie butter you can use the jar as the container.

  1. I love OIAJ also known as summer porridge or refrigerator oatmeal if you want more recipes. Laura you can use regular milk. This was one of my favorite meals when pregnant. You can also add more or less milk, do honey or maple syrup for the sweetener – the combos are endless. My husband and I would even do frozen fruit with the yogurt, milk, oats, chia and sweetener for a simpler version. This way it is also easier to make more than one flavor at a time.

    • Hi Veronica – YES so many possibilities and so fun to be creative when making OIAJ. Great idea to use frozen fruit, especially for the upcoming winter months when fruit is not in season. Love it! Thank you!
