Taking time to take care of yourself now that you’re a mom can be SO challenging.

Isn’t it so easy for this to be the first thing that flies out the window when you become a mamma? You’re exhausted because now you have a NON-STOP eater that won’t sleep AT ALL at night. Your body is different because well, you just gave birth to a human being. If you’re nursing, then you most likely feel like your body is not your own and you’re trying to navigate feeding your child and all the frustration that can go with that. If you’re working, then you have a million other things to think about, not to mention grocery shopping, cleaning, play dates, clipping coupons, focusing on your marriage, cooking- THE LIST GOES ON. It’s really hard to remember that taking time for yourself in the ways that you did pre-baby is just as important, maybe MORE important, than it was before you had kids.

I realize you might think I’m crazy and you might be wondering why I’m even mentioning this. But I really think that it can make a huge difference in ones morale. Taking even a small amount of time out of your day to care for yourself can be essential to your self-esteem as a mom.

We love being moms, but sometimes it’s fun and totally necessary to just feel like a WOMAN.

In turn, I think it can help us to be BETTER moms and refresh us for the day ahead, or relax us after a long one. For me, it’s as simple as washing my face and cleansing my skin at the end of each day. I love taking care of my skin and making sure that it’s cleansed, refreshed, and makeup free when I go to bed. I’m no esthetician  but I DO use and believe in all natural, organic products and produce on my skin. Yep, you read that right!

Simple ingredients that you can find in your pantry and refrigerator is what I use on my face.

I try not to use anything that has chemicals in it, aside from a gentle moisturizer that I use at the end of the regime. Here are a few of my standby’s that I use. These are recipes for washing your face AND facial masks that I’ve found to be super amazing on my skin.

OATMEAL CLEANSER:

Clean your face with oatmeal everyday! What makes oatmeal so amazing? It relieves redness, dryness & irritations. It’s anti-flammatory and it soothes itchy skin as well. While it absorbs and removes dirt and impurities it also exfoliates the skin for a brighter complexion. It’s also high in antioxidants which protects the skin from free radicals.

HOW TO DO IT:

All you need is oats! – get a palm full of oats and close your hand tightly holding in the oats. Run your hand under lukewarm water with just enough looseness in your hand to get the oats wet. You’ll feel the oats getting soggy in your hand. Then open your palm, making a cup with your hand, and get the oats a bit more saturated with water. Press the oats with your thumb and a milky liquid will appear so don’t waste that! Drain the milky consistency into your other hand and rub it all over your face. The milky water from the oatmeal will soften up the skin. Then massage the oatmeal all over your face chin and neck really massaging it into your face (about a minute.) Rinse your face with lukewarm water getting all the oats off and pat your face dry. Hydrate your face with moisturizer or Egyptian Magic. You can also take oatmeal baths! Throw some oatmeal in your bath whilst the water is running and your bath will turn into this milky creamy consistency. Great for dry and irritated skin!

DIY FRUIT ACID PEEL:

This peel retextures your skin naturally. Fruit acids contain the best natural exfoliants = AHA (Alpha Hydroxy Acids) AHA loosens the ‘glue’ that holds the surface skin cells. This allows dead skin cells to fall off to reveal healthy fresh skin cells. Fruits with AHA acids are Lemon, Grapefruit, Papaya, Lime, Oranges, Peaches, Pineapple, Tomatoes. Take your pick! For this recipe I use tomatoes for sensitive skin. It speeds up skin cell renewal, helps unclog pores, fades dark spots and scars, reduces blemishes, softens wrinkles & fine lines, improves skin’s overall texture and refines your skin.

HOW TO DO IT:

Take 1/2 tomato and squeeze the juice out into a bowl. (It’s okay if some pulp makes it’s way into the bowl). If you’re prone to oily skin, blemishes or scars add a little bit of lemon juice if you wish (1/2 tsp).  Add 1 tsp whipping cream or natural yogurt, as they are both a form of lactic acid are are very soothing and hydrating. Don’t waste the Tomato pulp! Mash it up. It makes an excellent skin cleanser. Set aside for now. Apply the Fruit Acid Peel evenly on face with a foundation brush avoiding eye and mouth areas. It will be a thin sort of clear consistency. Wait 15 minutes then rinse off the mask with water. Now use the tomato pulp we saved earlier and work it as a cleanser just with your hands. Packed with vitamins A, C, and K it’s great for fighting acne and refining skin. Rinse off with water and pat your face dry. Hydrate face with moisturizer or Egyptian Magic. After this peel your skin should look firmer refined and smoother. After a couple weeks you will really see a difference. Large pores will look less obvious, your skin will feel firmer and your complexion will look brighter. Use once or twice a week!

PEACHES AND CREAM SKIN REMEDY:

This nourishing mask will rescue vulnerable skin. Perfect for skin thats dry, sunburned, red or just dull. It will refresh your skin making it glow from within. Peaches are high in AHA’s so it regenerates the skin, increases elasticity, tightens skin, brightens complexion and it’s VERY hydrating. Whipping Cream is also high in AHA’s so it’s Nourishing for the skin, anti-aging, gently exfoliates the skin, retains elasticity of the skin, fades dark spots and brightens complexion. (You can use natural yogurt instead of whipping cream. They both contain lots of lactic acids)

HOW TO DO IT:

Take 1/2 very ripe Peach and cut it in half. Cut in half again into 1/4 and peel the skin away from the quarter. Mash it up with a fork until mushy and soft. Put into a small mixing bowl. Add 1 Tbsp. whipping cream or yogurt into the mixing bowl and stir really well until it’s a soft smooth consistency. Apply a very generous layer with a foundation brush avoiding eyes and mouth. You will have left overs to use another time! Let the mask settle for 20 minutes. Rinse off with lukewarm water and pat your face dry. You can already feel how smooth your skin is immediately after rinsing off the mask. Hydrate your skin with moisturizer or Egyptian Magic. This mask is a very hydrating mask so use it when your skin needs some hydration.

So I encourage you.

Take a little time to do something for yourself each day. If it’s not facial masks, figure out what it might be that refreshes your soul. Paint your toes that funky bright color you’ve been fearing! Get a pair of earrings that are totally outrageous! Or at the very least, make time to put your makeup on every day if it’s what will make you feel pretty. You deserve it! You are one hard working mamma who deserves to put herself first for a few minutes every day. I promise that your kids won’t suffer if you focus on yourself for a few minutes every day. You’re still a woman even though you have kids. And it’s totally ok to take oatmeal baths, do facial masks, shave your legs and put lip gloss on!
