Read All About It! Favorite Books for Littles

4

I have a ferocious reader on my hands. She is always asking to be read to, “reading”  to her stuffed animals or asking when we can get to the book store or library. That said, I’m always on the hunt for great new books, inexpensive ways to purchase them and creative ways to store them. Below are some of our favorites – let me know what you and your little one are enjoying!

Our Favorite Books:

Click Clack Moo, Cows that Type by:  Doreen Cronin

Move Over Rover! by: Karen Beaumont

Tyler Makes Pancakes by: Tyler Florence (the story includes a delicious pancake recipe! It’s a great way to get a stubborn reader excited about a new story)

How Rocket Learned To Read by: Tad Hills

Chicka Chicka Boom Boom by: Bill Martin Jr., John Archambault and Lois Ehlert (Or as Baylor says it: “Chicken Boom Boom”)

The Going To Bed Book by: Sandra Boynton

A Treasury of Curious George, The New Adventures of Curious George and Curious George, Stories to Share by: H. A. Rey and Margret Rey (yes, there is a CG theme here…and it has spread everywhere!)

Angelina Ballerina by: Helen Craig  (much like Curious George, there are a ton of Angelina stories and we love them all!)

Goodnight, Goodnight, Construction Site by: Sherri Duskey Rinker and Tom Lichtenheld

Skippyjon Jones by: Judy Schachner (this book cracks my husband and I up)

The Napping House by: Audrey Wood and Don Wood  (a personal favorite from my childhood)

Sick Day for Amos McGee by: Philip C. Stead and Erin Stead

Cowgirl Kate and Cocoa by: Erika Silverman

Where To Get Them:

~Amazon. We have an Amazon Prime account and it’s worth every penny. Items come next day with no shipping fee. There is a yearly subscription fee, but if you buy often, it pays for it’s self.

~Amazon Used. The used book section of Amazon is great too – just watch out for shipping fees (sometimes as much as the book!) and for long delivery times.

~Your Library. Personally, I think Mustang library has one of the most fun play sections AND great book selections. Plus, as Kristin noted earlier this week, not only are the books great but there are fun and cool activities at all the Scottsdale Libraries.

~Friends and Family. We have always asked for no gifts from friends for birthday parties, but our family nods and smiles and then does what they want! So we asked if they must bring a gift, to make it a book. We spent the weeks after Baylor’s birthday enjoying a new book each day.

Where the Heck To Put Them:

~Shelf. Duh. But consider stacking them both vertically and horizontally to create visual interest. This is also a great trick to keep books from falling down when the don’t quite fill up the shelf. Also, putting the books in order of height makes any shelf look neat and tidy.

~ Baskets. I love shoving baskets in any available corner, under beds, on shelves…wherever.

~Down Low. Even at this phase, books are still at risk of getting torn or worse. So any books with paper pages go up high on the shelf and all board books that are a little tougher to destroy go down low so they can be accessed without mom’s help.

What are you and your kiddo’s favorite books?

  1. We don’t own Click Clack Moo but we’ve checked it out from the library before and LOVE it. That’s a great one. 🙂 With the 4yo we are into read-aloud chapter books – we’ve done ALL the Beverly Cleary books, Charlotte’s Web and Stuart Little, and now we’re into the Little House series. As a reader/writer/English Lit major, this makes a mama soooooooo happy. 🙂

For the 2yo we LOVE love Brian Lies (Bats at the Ballgame, Bats at the Library) and anything by Julia Donaldson (the Gruffalo books, Room on the Broom, Snail and the Whale).

I am also a huge fan of old school Little Golden Books and other 1940s-1960s picture books. I don’t know why but I love the pictures. We love Blueberries for Sal, The LIttle Engine that Could, The Little Red Caboose, Make Way for Ducklings, etc. etc.

Also a big fan of baskets for books. Makes putting them away fast and easy (and kids can help). I also (and this may be sacrilege?) throw away paper book jackets/covers on hardback storybooks if the artwork is replicated on the hardback cover itself. They get ripped and ruined and nowadays the cover art is right there for you anyway (every once in a while it isn’t, and then I try to salvage the paper jacket).

    Thanks Beth! Great post!

  2. My girls LOVE anything by Mo Willems. Especially the Knuffle Bunny series and the Piggie and Elephant books. We will all sit and read them for hours!

    • Oh and his Pigeon books too. “The Pigeon Wants a Puppy” is Sophia’s (age 2.5) absolute favorite.
