Making It Stick: Giving Back as a Family

1

If you’re like me, your ultimate goal in parenting is to raise a little person into a big person who not only spends as little time as possible in prison or on the sofa of a shrink, but one who lives and loves with purpose and strength of character.

We live in a city where entitlement is as easy to catch as the nasty flu bug that is sweeping through my kid’s school. How do we open our children’s eyes to the world around them – and open their hearts to serve those in need?

One thing I strongly believe in is that serving together as a family does more to cause noble character to stick than anything else.

As you read this today, I’m on a tiny little plane about to land in Cap Hatien, Haiti. Here I will serve with an organization I love called www.hello-somebody.com. Tonight in my hotel in Miami I have received 99999 texts from my 10-year -old telling me she missed me, she wanted me to tuck her in, etc. But she put on a brave face because she knows that in our family we make sacrifices to serve. She kept saying she wanted to go with me.

I may not be quite ready to bring her to a fourth world country but there are many things that we – and you – can do to serve with our kids no matter their age.

I’m going to share a few ideas, but I’d love for you to chime in and share your ideas for serving.

So serve together. Our kids, our families, our world will be better for it.
