Ethnic Hair Care Workshop in Scottsdale | Curlyloks

Curly hair, kinky hair, afro hair, curl patterns, plaits, two strand twists, a twistout, cornrows!  It’s all new to me. I was thrilled to start the hair adventure with my daughter from the first day she was born. After her first bath her beautiful hair curled tight into a perfect afro; my husband and I cracked open a bottle of champagne in celebration of our successful first bath time with our beautiful daughter! After the first few months I realized I needed WAY more than excitement to make hair time a success for us both. She had a few other issues going on so hair care took a back seat to other more pressing matters. We fumbled our way through those first few months, tugging, washing and attempting to detangle.  She screamed and I grew more and more frustrated with my lack of knowledge. Who knew a newborn could have such thick, amazingly curly hair?

After the first 10 months agreat friend of mine gave me the sit down, saying “Girl, I don’t care what other issues your daughter has going on you’ve gotta figure out this girl’s hair!” I started cracking up andrealized she was right; I had no idea what I was doing.

I began to spend wicked amounts of time on YouTube trying to figure out how to best care for her hair, but I needed and wanted more personal interaction. That’s when a friend introduced me to Arlette, Dashonna, and CURLYLOKS!  At 10 months I grabbed baby girl and raced to the first CURLYLOKS workshops. From the moment we walked through the door I knew we were in the right place. Arlette’s enthusiasm for teaching moms, biological moms, foster moms, adoptive moms, and other caregivers was clear and contagious.  She is passionate about teaching all moms how to bond, care for and connect with their daughters through hair. On our first day she commented about how her peers would ask her, “why don’t you just have these moms pay you to do their hair?”  Her response was,“why would I want to rob moms of the opportunity to bond and love their daughters through caring for their hair? I’d rather teach moms how to do their daughter’s hair themselves!” And that is exactly what she did. I graduated the workshop with flying colors (which is saying something since I never even do my own hair).

Six months later, not only do I enjoy hair days, but I also approach them with confidence and knowledge. I have been empowered and equipped to love my daughter through caring for her hair in an educated way that is fun for us both. The best part is whenever I run into questions or a new style that I can’t figure out CURLYLOKS is my first phone call. I am thrilled when I get compliments on her hair now, and I love saying that I can do it myself! Thank you Arlette and Dashonna for your passion in teaching moms and me.

Love,
Shaleen

  1. Thanks for the information! My daughter is biracial and her hair has lovely spiral curls. As a person with stick straight hair, my imagination stops at pigtails. I will need all the information I can get!
