Hostess with the Mostess?

3

This month, I threw three social gatherings in three days.  A wine tasting, a baby shower and a birthday party.  It was more than chaotic.  Between shopping, cleaning, invites and unexpected hiccups, I was spent at the end of it.  It was more than worth it, though.  The birthday party was for my youngest daughter’s 6th birthday.  She had a ton of fun and the sweet smile on her face made my day.  As I reflected on each of the events, however, I saw some very strong themes in my planning.  If they weren’t right on top of each other, I think they would have otherwise gone undetected.

I am more of a procrastinator than a planner.  For my daughter’s birthday, for instance,  I had nothing more than a vague idea just 6 days before we had it.  (insert Steph hyperventilating).  The wine tasting was thrown together the night before.  The baby shower, although planned in advance because it was thrown with other friends, I decided the menu parts I was responsible for the week of.  I shopped just days before, running back and forth to the market having forgotten items here or there.

I mix groups.  I am not concerned in the least bit about people in a small room awkwardly trying to make conversations.  It may sound insensitive, but my thought behind it is not so.  I run in an array of circles.  I choose my friends carefully.  When a fun event comes about I think how great all of these people are and how they should all know each other.   I love that on the surface, their only connection may seem to be my family.

I am not a mingler.  I realized that I spend most of my time keeping refreshments and activities going.  I spend very little time actually talking to my guests.  I have every intention of spending time with people, but in a large group, I find the task daunting.  Seeing each of their faces, however, makes me want to set up play dates, coffees, or girls’ night outs soon to catch up in smaller numbers.

I am curious, am I a crazy hostess?  How do you plan and throw parties?  Are you a super planner like our Steph? Or more fly-by-the-seat-of-your pants like me?

  1. Ohh, I love this post. I love anything to do with parties! I’m an OCD, organized to the detail, somewhat crazy, I’ve made 42 lists for it, but really overjoyed to throw a party, type person! My hubby is was more like you and it was fun recently when I said I wanted to have a “yeah! it’s fall” party and he was excited by the idea. The blessing I give him is not to go crazy the final hour before everyone arrives. I love the colors and details and textures and food! Oh, great…now I really want to throw a party! By the way, I loved chatting with you at Kim’s.
