I am so excited to be here at Scottsdale Moms Blog to share with you my favorite date night activity. This is an especially great one if you get a little sick of the dinner and a movie routine. Tucked away in Papago Plaza at Scottsdale Rd and McDowell is Theatre 168. It is home to the Jester’z Improv Troupe. They perform every Friday night at 8pm and 10pm. Saturday they have three shows at 6pm, 8pm, and 10pm. Admission is $12 a person, with the exception of the Saturday 6pm show which is $10.

First, let me tell you a little bit about improvised comedy so you know what to expect when you go. The Director asks the audience for suggestions and the performers have to act out a scene based on those suggestions. The Jester’z make up everything they say and do on the spot. If you have ever seen the show, “Who’s Line it it Anyways?” it is a lot like that. One game they played last time I was there is called “Scenes from a hat.” Before the show started, audience members wrote down their favorite movie and TV quotes. The Jester’z were given the direction to act out the story of little red riding hood. As the scene went on, they grabbed one of these quotes from the bucket and had to work it into the scene. It was so funny! Lots of references to “winning” and “tiger’s blood.”

Jester’z is always a fun place to go, but this year is extra special. Jester’z is celebrating their 10th anniversary in 2011. Their actual anniversary weekend was back in March and they had a big weekend planned. My friend Edna and I decided it would be fun to celebrate by going to 6 shows in 3 days. We saw about 8 hours of improv comedy and loved every minute of it. I really thought I would be burnt out by the last show, but I laughed just as hard as I did in the very first show. Edna has been to over 80 shows in the last year and a half and never heard the same joke twice! She is what they call a Jester’z Super Fan. Hopefully by now I have you convinced you to give it a try. They have some special deals you should know about, so you can get a free or discounted ticket! Mother’s Day weekend you can get in for free if you come with one or more of your children. You can also get in for a discounted rate if you aren’t able to attend with your kids. Jester’z shows are great for kids five and up. They focus on family friendly humor so you won’t find any swearing or dirty jokes. My five year old son has been before and he loves it. He might not get all the jokes, but he thinks it is hilarious as they are moving around on stage and acting the scenes out.

Jester’z is also celebrating their anniversary by giving everyone free admission on their birthday. If you go to Jester’z within 6 days of your birthday you can get in for free with some proof of course. Jester’z also runs Facebook promotions from time to time, so you can check out their Facebook page too. Reservations are required, so call (480) 423-0120 to reserve your spot. Maybe I will even see you there! **Disclaimer: I am in no way associated with Jester’z. I just love it so much I want to share it with everyone. I was not compensated for this glowing report, although maybe if enough of you go, I could be. 😉
