Moms About Town – SMB Guide to Family Friendly Events for Sept 2017

6

Are we literally in the month of September? This just seems crazy. Yet here we are. So, Scottsdale Moms, when you are about town, here’s your guide for Scottsdale family friendly events happening this month.

scottsdale family friendly events

National Lazy Mom Day – Friday, September 1 (first Friday in September – AKA TODAY!). Let’s just kick off the month with a whizzbang of a day, shall we? National Lazy Mom Day is kind of like a dream come true. Moms around the country take this day as a holiday from laundry, dishes, car pools and bathroom cleaning. Take a break, gal. Delegate the chores. Place a moratorium on family feuds. Use #NationalLazyMomDay to post on social media.  And please remember to tag us @scottsdalemoms so we can follow along with all you lazy moms!

Labor Day – Monday, September 4. On the first Monday in September, we salute the American worker force. Nobody works harder than you, Mama. Why not celebrate your efforts by throwing a backyard BBQ using these recipes shared on SMB at the start of summer. Labor Day usually signifies the end of summer for the rest of the country, but we all know we still have at least another month of hot before we hit our temperature sweet spot month of October.

Children’s Learning & Play Festival – Saturday, September 9, 9am–4pm, Westworld of Scottsdale. The Children’s Learning and Play Festival is FREE, open to the public, and features widely-acclaimed children’s authors, illustrators, music, live performances, bounce houses and rides, STEM activations, local business vendors and host of interactive activities for toddlers, children and young adults. The festival offers live performances and interaction with storybook characters. Dinosaur exhibits, arts and crafts, science and tech showcase, animal attractions, photo booth, kids’ rides, face painting and other attractions are also scheduled. Please feel free to bring nonperishable food items to be donated to the Vista Del Camino Food Bank to help those in need. Visit the event’s website here for more details.

Free Movies in the Desert: Moana – Saturday, September 9, 5pm–8pm, OdySea in the Desert. Movies in the Courtyard continues featuring an outdoor movie for families the second Saturday of every month. The ninety-minute pre-movie entertainment show will begin at 5pm featuring a Moana meet and greet and photo opportunity, a Hawaiian dance performance, a learn to draw PUA activity, a Lei making station and a giveaway table with prize wheel. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own chairs/blankets while food and drinks will be available for purchase at the surrounding restaurants. The event is FREE to the public.  Food/drinks are offered for an additional price. For more information visit www.odyseainthedesert.com

Fall Concert Series – Saturdays, beginning September 9 – October 28, 2017, 5pm–7pm, Scottsdale Quarter. Rock Lobster kicks off the series on September 9th playing the Ultimate in 80’s retro music. On September 16 Shallow Water brings their high-energy dance music that mixes the best of classic hits from the past with your favorite popular hits of today. September 23rd you’ve got the Crown Kings playing the most danceable songs from over five decades of Rock-n-Roll and new Country favorites. Vinyl Station rounds out the month of September at the Scottsdale Quarter.

National Kids Take Over the Kitchen Day – Wednesday, September 13. Kids and teens across the country are called to take over their kitchens on this day using their favorite recipes and make a meal for their family! Of course, adult supervision and assistance should be given for the younger bakers and chefs in the house! The objective of this mission of the Young Chefs Academy (YCA) is to empower kids and teens to become more actively involved in the planning, preparation and cooking of meals.  The YCA is fostering family bonds and actively fighting the battle against the many serious health and social issues related to youth’s eating habits in today’s time. Check out these easy, kid-capable recipe ideas from the Food Network.

Junk in the Trunk Vintage Market – September 15, 16, & 17 at Westworld of Scottsdale. Party like a junker at this super fun, popular event. Market attendees are sure to find the best collection of vintage and handmade vendors from across the country selling all things chippy, rusty, vintage and handmade. From live music to the best local food trucks, shoppers will be inspired while browsing over 100,000 square feet of vintage and handmade treasures. Visit Junk in the Trunk for ticket options.

Kitten Pop-Up Adoption Shop with Arizona Animal Welfare League – September 16 & 17, 11am-4pm at Scottsdale Quarter across from Sorso & Kona Grill. KITTENS! Summer is known as “Kitten Season” here in AZ and more than 1,200 kittens come through AAWL needing fur-ever homes. Join AAWL on September 16th-17th to find your purrrrfect kitten match! Even if taking home a kitten is not on your heart at this time, the kiddies and the kitties will love playing with each other for a little bit. Donations are accepted if you are lead to make one.

Paw Patrol Live! – September 16 & 17, Comerica Theater. See Ryder & everybody’s favorite pups on stage for an action-packed, high-energy, musical adventure. The gang from Adventure Bay show that “no job is too big, no pup is too small,” sharing lessons for all ages about citizenship, social skills and problem solving. The zoo opens their gates at 7am (6am for members) and closes at 2pm (daily). Admission for adults and children (non-members) are discounted. Visit the Phoenix Zoo website for more details.

Scottsdale’s Grand Ole’ Picnic – Saturday, September 30 4pm-7pm, Eldorado Park (2311 N. Miller Rd). Scottsdale Parks and Recreation invites you to join the celebration of Eldorado Park! In 1967 Eldorado Park was created in Scottsdale. Fifty years later they’re hosting a Grand Ole’ Picnic to commemorate the event. The Grand Ole’ Picnic is a free event where they’ll be serving up food and live music for everyone to enjoy. The park will offer up some old-fashioned games, some great exhibits about Scottsdale’s past, vintage cars and more! Sounds like fun and it’s FREE for the family to enjoy!
