This Saved My Sanity: Blackout Drapes

1

New moms get so many product “suggestions” thrown their way.

“This is the best carseat!”

“Use this and your child will sleep!”

“These onesies are double the price, but the best on the market.”

You spend thousands of dollars before the baby is even born, and guess what? You probably won’t even use half the products you buy! At least, that’s the mistake I made.

However, there is one product I didn’t buy and wish I had. Blackout Drapes. Moms, I beg you. Invest in blackout drapes to save your sanity. I was too cheap to invest and spent way too many summer mornings waking up (literally) at the crack of dawn. It’s all over the minute light hits the room and that means it could be as early as 4:45 AM. No thank you!!

Here I am 2 years and 3 months into parenthood and I finally bit the bullet after one too many early morning wake-up calls. Guess what? It worked!! My daughter went from waking up between 4:45 & 5:15 AM to waking up at her normal time which is 6:30 AM. That hour makes all the difference in the world.

It’s doesn’t matter where you buy your blackout drapes, as long as you make sure they are 100% blackout. The best ones are the ones that have the white lining to provide full coverage. Now, the cost was the main reason why I didn’t invest in blackout blinds at the beginning. Curtains can quickly add up in price and the nursery window is the largest window in our house (of course). When I finally decided to concede, I spent days searching Lowes, Target and Home Depot only to find a very small selection of ugly blackout curtains. I searched online, but for this selection I really wanted to see them in person and I definitely wasn’t going to spend the money for Pottery Barn Kids. Then I went to Bed, Bath & Beyond and the stars aligned! They have a nice selection that are reasonably priced (plus they always have great coupons!) If you are desperate to get started, you can try these blackout tips from this past post too.

So from one “slightly more veteran new Mom” to another, save yourself some sleep and buy blackout drapes!
