I’m not really the resolution setting type. So if you are looking for a post on how to set a New Year’s resolution, this is not the post for you. If you are interested in how one Scottsdale mom floundered through this January trying to decide what to do with the rest of the year, keep reading.

First, I had to figure out how to set a resolution. January is a great time to reflect and plan. I came up with a few questions to help me narrow down what I want 2016 to look like: What inspires me now? What do I want to get out of the next 12 months? Where (and who) would I like to be a year from now?

I pondered these questions for days. I turned them over in my mind, and spent time trying to find a path that I could use to guide my year. I kept coming back to two thoughts: I want to spend more time connecting with people I love, and I want to live mindfully in all aspects of my life.

With the big picture nailed down, I started trying to put together a plan to achieve this. For the record, there are way too many internet resources for goal setting/life planning. I came up with a list of things that I wanted to do this year, making sure that they related to one of the categories above. A few examples: make monthly dates with my best friends to make sure we spend time together regularly, de-clutter my house before I move, and start a backyard garden with E.

Spending time thinking about the new year, and how I want to spend it, turned out to be a very productive exercise. I’m pretty excited for 2016, and might need to make this resolution setting a yearly thing.
