New Mom Fashion Sense – How It All Changes After Baby

Your body is changed. Your mind is blown. Maybe you lost the baby weight, maybe you still have a way to go, but regardless—certain areas are distributed a bit differently. Nowadays, dressing like a mom doesn’t mean you wear a certain type of jean, or yoga pants or breastfeeding-friendly attire. It is really just a change in your thought process. Within a few short months, you will need to embrace at least some of the following:

flats

Ask the right questions. If someone is in the vicinity while you are getting dressed, you are bound to ask the following questions:

  • “Is this too wrinkled? I don’t want to iron.”
  • “Is this too short? I need to be able to bend and pick up the baby without showing my goods.”
  • “Do these shoes match? I can’t see straight.”

You may not even care if you look pretty or professional (if you happen to be headed back to work). These are just the essential questions, people. And to be honest, you may be asking the baby these questions. Sometimes they are your only audience.

Accept the flats. They are just plain dangerous for a while. You have to carry about 400 pounds of baby gear (even if you’re a minimalist) and no one here needs a twisted ankle. If you are too attached to the posture and presence heels give you, change into them when you get to your destination.

Be cool with changing. I have definitely gone to work with poop and/or puke stains on my shirt without realizing it (I will not confess how long it took me to notice). Keep a change of clothes on hand, or always know where there is a TJ Maxx nearby. The first time I had a planned happy hour with friends after I had my baby, I had to stop at TJ Maxx on my way to the restaurant. I bought a $17.99 dress that matched the shoes I was wearing, and I receive compliments on it all the time. I was 15 minutes late, but at least I didn’t have poop on me anymore!

Be okay with throwing away your favorite articles of clothing. Those are probably the ones that will get ruined, so just be emotionally ready for it. Your favorite pants will get butt cream stains on them, the one shirt that makes you look great will be stained with raspberries. It happens. Your job is to be pleasantly surprised if it doesn’t happen.

Own your mom-ness. You are fabulous, being a mom is fabulous, and all that matters at the end of the day is that you wear something comfortable enough to cuddle with your kid!
