Family Fun: How To Make Colored Cloud Dough

Cloud Dough

I loved the smooth feel of the fluid kinetic sand that is supposed to more soothing and mess-free than regular sand, but looking at the prices online they run at about $15 for only 12 ounces of the stuff! So I thought I might as well experiment with the much-cheaper, even softer (if a little messier) version of child-friendly dough.

Have you ever run your hands through cloud dough? It is not your old school Play-Doh! Cloud dough is super soft to touch (imagine running your fingers through flour), and then, amazingly, it can mold like damp sand. Cloud dough makes building sandcastles so much fun!

After some research I found the best, simplest recipe that shows you how to make colored cloud dough, and wanted to share it with you.

What you will need:

  • 8 Cups All-Purpose Flour
  • 1-2 Cup Baby Oil
  • 1-2 teaspoon Milk Powder: I found it at local craft store. You can also use Tempera Paint Powder.

What you will do:

In a large bowl, mix together the flour and oil. I like to use my hands, but using a potato smasher or other kitchen gadgets can be fun for the kids.

Add more oil as needed, until you get a consistency of moldable sand.

Divide into bowls to make different colors.

Use 1-2 teaspoons of Milk Powder, or enough to get the color consistency you desire.

Once again, smash, squish and mix the mixture until well blended.

Add some sand toys and kids will have a blast!
