#1: Visit a Local Farm. fall pic 3 edit copyWhen I lived in the Midwest, visiting a farm in the Fall was a must-do event. I feel no different living in the Southwest now. While we may not have endless fields of apple orchards, we are lucky to have some great, kid-friendly farms around town that are brimming with pumpkins, mazes, and crafty goods. My favorites are Schnepf Farms and Tolmachoff Farms. fall pic 1 edited copyThey have kid rides, pumpkin picking, a corn maze, petting zoos, homemade jams and pickled yummies. Although they are a bit of a drive, I look forward to this event with my kids each year! (Best for kids ages 0 -10)

#2: Visit your local library for fun FREE fall events. For Halloween, your little ones can trick-or-treat in their costumes at the library at night (so spooky!). Local teenagers volunteer to be dispersed along the hallways with candies, stickers and fun treats for the all the little ghosts and goblins. For Thanksgiving, the library hosts a holiday craft-making opportunity while the librarian reads stories of the First Thanksgiving. (Best for kids ages 0 – 7)

#3: Visit REAL fall. To truly “breathe in” the new season, I like to go on a day trip and drive up to Flagstaff or Prescott to hike with my family. The air is brisk and cool with the real scent of pine. While hiking, my kids collect fallen pine cones and pine needles, fall leaves and acorn shells. We take the items home and place them in a tall clear vase for a perfect table centerpiece that the kids feel proud to create themselves!

#4: Create a kids mini-spooky area of the house. Whether decorating for Halloween, or Harvest (or both!), bringing the fall season into my home is one of my favorite things. I can still remember begging my parents to take down the Halloween boxes from the attic so I could Scotch tape the decorations on our front windows and door. Now in my own home, my kids’ favorite is decorating “their area” (the hallway outside their bedrooms) in a “spooky theme,” complete with spiderwebs hanging across the ceiling, and motion detecting Halloween lights and sound toys. hallway edited copyWhen friends come over to play, my kids love taking them through their mini-spookhouse (with lights off, of course!).

Wishing you a very happy fall!  Let us know your favorite ways to ring in the season!!
