Why the Green Acre Gilbert Dog Tragedy reminded me of my first loves!

Sherman & Parker

For most young couples, bringing a pet into your relationship is that next step of showing commitment and well…buying some time until those kiddos arrive.

daisy SMBOur two English Bulldogs, Daisy & Wallace, were the absolute loves of our lives!

They smell, they shed and they drool. But it didn’t matter.

We couldn’t get enough of them and proudly displayed them on every Christmas card!

We walked them daily; albeit a short one block walk (bulldogs tend to be a bit sedentary) and occasionally I snuck them in bed with me. Yes, all the shedding too! From belly rubs to bathing their wrinkly bodies, they were spoiled to the point of silliness.

And then came those babies in those baby carriages…wallace SMB

Many warned me: “They would take a back seat”.

Confidently, I refused said advice and knew we were different.

We weren’t.

Daisy & Wallace gradually took a back seat to the new loves of our lives. Naturally, our children should take priority to the family pets but time travels fast and before we knew it, walking the dogs became a rare event.

Were they still well-treated for? Of course! But we became complacent and BUSY with all things toddler!

Then, an EYE-OPENER!

Sadly, the Green Acre Gilbert Dog Tragedy hit too close to home for our family.

My cousin’s family lost their two dogs, Sherman & Parker, in this tragic event. I will hold my opinions and let you all judge for yourself on speculation as to what actually occurred. It was a heart-breaking and unfortunate tragedy.

My heart goes out to all families involved!

** If you were unaware of this event, you can find countless articles on their Facebook page: The Tragedy at Green Acre Dog Boarding Gilbert, AZ

This event served as an emotional reminder that snuggling with our smelly and furry friends was a blessing snoring right at our feet. A blessing we were taking for granted and not a chore. Our kids now snuggle them a little tighter and an evening walk is an exciting event they deserve!

Although our dogs have always been cared for in a great manner, we forgot the most important piece of all: they are a part of our family and always will be.

I dedicate this post to all the families grieving their pups and know your story has bettered the lives of dogs everywhere.

  1. So true! I went to high school with Shannon Gillette, the Mom of Sherman and Parker, whom you have pictured up top. They are recovering but obviously hoping for the justice that is deserved. If you haven’t come across it, ‘like’ the page on FB for lots of details of the ongoing investigation. Great post and like I said, so VERY TRUE!
