Adoption, it’s ok to ask

0

It seems like on the internet, you can find a list of almost anything…

What not to ask a parent of a special needs child.

What not to ask a parent of a teen struggling with addiction.

What not to say to an expectant mother.

I think this can leave us paralyzed.  We stand there wanting to ask what we can do to help. We want to ask to learn about the situation. And we want to ask, just because we are curious!

Well, I’m here to tell you,

It’s ok to ask.

It really is all about how you do it. When you approach me, and you give my family a compliment, or a smile,  we are good.  If you are curious, just tell me. The most common question I receive is, “I noticed you and your husband don’t have any red hair, where does he get his red hair from?”

When I tell you we are in the process of adopting this amazing bundle of joy and energy, don’t feel like you need to run. If you need a minute, because I shocked you a little bit, it’s ok. Walking away, leaves me wondering if I did something wrong (or if I forgot to put on deodorant!)

Go ahead, let me know what you’re thinking! It’s ok to ask.

Hang in there and remember – we are all on the same team! We all just want to love on our little ones!

Still worried you may say the wrong thing? For more thoughts on what to say (and what not to say) to an adoptive mom, check out this great post from a past SMB Contributor/ Mother of adopted children.
