Entrepreneurial Mamas: This one’s for you!

When I decided to stay home full time after having my second baby, I had secret hopes that “stay-at-home” would evolve into “work-part-time-from-home-doing-something-I-love” as my kids grew. I had no plan or even a point of focus, but I held on to a fuzzy vision of a future in which I’d write words for real money when my kids were at school or napping.

Three-and-a-half years (and another kid) later, I work from home 10-15 hours per week as a freelance writer and blog editor/social media manager. Looking back, I can see an odd collection of happy accidents and gradual self-discovery that led to this place, but two decisions stand out as fundamental turning points.

The first: I started writing for Scottsdale Moms Blog! Joining our contributor team was my first foray into online writing of any kind – and parenting writing specifically. My role at SMB grew into an editor position, which paved the way for some amazing opportunities – including my current job.

The second: I took a freelance writing class from a writer/blogger I admired. In that class I learned the nuts-and-bolts of building a writing career AND I made connections with others who wanted to do the same thing I did.

The class was taught by Meagan Francis, author of the blog The Happiest Home (where I now act as Managing Editor). Meagan is no longer offering freelance writing classes like the one I took, but she recently launched a class/coaching program for moms with an entrepreneurial dream. It’s called Build Your Big Dream, and it’s a 6-week online program that combines one-on-one mentoring with small group support, feedback, and interaction.

If you have something big you’ve been wanting to launch – a career change, a new venture, an at-home business, or a creative passion – I highly recommend Meagan as a coach and mentor. She’s a mom of five (YEP) and has built a thriving at-home career over the last decade while raising her kids at the same time. She’s practical AND passionate, and knows how real-life and motherhood and business really can work (and play) together.

I asked Meagan if I could swing a discount for Scottsdale Moms Blog readers, because I know there are those of you, like me, who have a dream of working from home, writing a book, starting a business, or getting a big idea off the ground. Lucky for us, she’s offering $80 off the program!
